Thanks to the great support of Aus Dent Warrnambool and the South Coast Drag Racing Association we would like to
offer $1000 cash to the fastest pass made by any bike for the upcoming season (ET not mph).

In a great incentive to get some faster bikes to our track this season and turn that into bigger bike fields at all of our

18th, 19th & 20th February 2011 - VW Portland + Chicago Shootout

Another rain interrupted meeting was the order of the weekend at South Coast Raceway for the annual VW Portland meeting.

Late Friday afternoon the street drags were cancelled due to rain.

Early Saturday morning it was looking much the same outcome for the VW qualifying and Chicago shootout, but the weather cleared late in the morning and after some minor repairs to the rain affected startline racing was able to get underway shortly after 1pm.

With only half the normal amount of entrants on track we have been used to seeing on the Saturday for the Chicago shootout due to the weather forecast, it was not going to dampen the meeting, with 42 VW entrants bringing the number back up the 72.

Peter Bartlett was making the most of the cool conditions in the bikes class, showing some early signs of a possible personal best time on the bike going 5.559 @ 136mph to take the number 1 qualifying position. Bartlett backed the run up later in the day to take the lead in the $1000 Bike quick ET with a 5.430 @ 137.20mph.

Malcolm Luff and Jamie Dohnt were the two highest bike point scorers after 3 rounds of the Chicago Shootout winning their way to the final.

It was Jamie Dohnt though who made the most of this final, taking a comfortable win with a 7.212 @ 90mph on his 6.80 dial in to Luff’s troubled 8.120 on a 7.29 dial in.

In Super Street it was David Bunnik who took a controversial win over David Todd.  David Todd won the race initially after both racers had a dual breakout in the final with Todd breaking out by the least amount but going under the 7.00 super street handicap in process with a 6.959 second pass.  The first or worse rule coming into play handing to win back to David Bunnik.

Top qualifier in Super Sedan Chris Farrell who made the most of the overcast day with a clean sweep, also taking three wins in the shootout making his way to the final and then taking the win over Matthew Hoggan with a super consistent run and a great reaction time.  Farrell taking out the final with a 5.517 @ 126mph on a 5.48 dial in to Hoggan’s 6.376 @ 108mph on a 6.35 dial in.

In the VW Air Cooled class in was tough going with 19 entries fighting out a place in the final with Andrew Champness from Kaniva and Rose Merret taking out the top spots with 4 wins apiece.

Andrew Champness made good use of the finals opportunity taking the win over Rose Merret with a 10.611 @ 63mph after Rose Merret’s Red light.

Portland’s Jamie Pridham was on a dream run in VW special’s class taking 4 wins in the shootout to cement his position in the final but slipped at the last hurdle going to quick on his 11.00 dial in, running a 10.932 @ 58mph handing to win over to Barry Lord who cut a great .054 light and run a 10.611 @ 63mph.

Courney Hawker all the way from St Helens Park chalked up one for the girls with a win in the final over Tim Bailey from Drysdale after Tim left the line to early and red light. Hawker taking the win with a 10.368 @ 68mph.

It was Mike Waldron took the number 1 qualifying position in the Top VW class with a great run of 6.817 @ 101mph. However it was David O’Conner from Malvern and Brad Young from Sydney who made their way to the final with 4 wins a piece in Sunday.  O’Conner taking the win in the final with a 7.128 @ 95mph to Young’s 7.285 @ 97mph.

South Coast Slamfest Meeting Report

South Coast Raceway conducted its biggest meet of its season and the club’s history on the weekend, Slamfest for Wishes, enabling the club to raise $6000 to donate to the make-a-wish foundation.

12 Top Doorslammers from around Australia planned to arrive throughout the week to attend the event, drag racing legend Victor Bray travelling around the area to showcase the event throughout the week, South Coast Raceway was ready to put on one of the loudest shows on earth in Portland’s backyard.

With 108 entrants pre-entered for the event, the action needed to start on Friday evening with two rounds of qualifying being run, approx. 1000 spectators got to witness some exhibition passes by some top doorslammer drivers as they got some experience on a new track they have never seen before, Scott MacLean in his Studebaker doorslammer was also able to reset the track record to 4.3secs in a spectacular slip and slide dash for the finish line which certainly kept the crowd entertained.

Racing was halted for some major track oil down issues meaning racing was behind schedule, once qualifying was complete the normal Friday night burnout competition was held, with plenty of support from locals and surrounding area, the win ended up going to Brett Parkes who would be enjoying a comfortable lead in this season’s burnout competition now.

Once Saturday’s racing continued, 2500 spectators filed in to chance the weather conditions, with the 3rd round of qualifying completed and the first round of the Doorslammers about to start the rain started to tumble and shatter any chances of any racing continuing for the day.

With the South Coast raceway having a rain day permit up its sleeve, the doorslammer drivers were all here to put on a show for the mammoth crowd, ultimately deciding to start racing again on Sunday with the gates open free of charge.

Sunday the skies were clear with sunshine much to the delight of racers, spectators and organisers. Eliminations began and the crowd was again massive, Gary Busch drove his Pontiac Firebird in the Supercharged Outlaw class to not only break the new track record but also the speed record, stopping the clock at 4.174sec doing 171.76mph, just to make sure it wasn’t luck, his next pass was again close to another record by posting 4.185sec.

With the doorslammer drivers itchy to get racing, many were on a tight schedule due to the rain delays and needed to make flights home, an altered format for racing was used so the drivers could still put on a show. Fastest Qualifier for the class was Ben Bray with 4.222sec and the eventual winner for the Slamfest was Peter Blake with classy driving in the final against Scott MacLean. The action never stopped there as exhibition racing continued with the more notable being father-son duo Victor and Ben Bray having side by side racing at its best for the crowd.

Results for the Super Street class, Drew McRae from Hamilton was super consistent all day and landed his first class win with a 7.169 @ 85.55mph to runner up David Bunnik let lighting 7.301 @84.91mpg from Casterton who was also the fastest qualifier.

Junior Dragster Luke Cartledge had a great day racing taking out the class and top qualifying with a 8.362 @ 79mph while Jess Turner was runner up after breaking a chain in the final.

For super sedans Brett Henley from Mt. Gambier come away with the win in his sleek Torana running a 5.440 @ 126mph on a 5.38 dial in, runner up for the class and top qualifier was Stewart McBain from Ballarat who red light in the final by just nine 1/1000’s of a second and braking out with a 5.251 on a 5.26 dial in.

Modified dragster class top qualifier was Ken Stewart, the final was taken out by Simon Barlow from Adelaide with a 4.987 @ 126mpg on a 4.90 dial in to runner up Steve Purse from NSW with 5.785 @ 118mph on a 5.60 dial in.

Snag Gale from Naracoorte cleaned up in the bikes 6.763 @ 106mph to Gavin Dohnt from Henty break out on a 6.82 dial in with a 6.763 @ 99mph, Graham Hullah from Melbourne top qualified the class with a 5.662.

With good numbers for the Supercharged Outlaws Class, racing was always going to be great, Gary Busch’s track record stood for him to be top qualifier but Doina Day from Junction Hill had super consistency day with a 4.651 @ 147mph on a 4.60 dial in helped her win the class against Bill Waldock from Baccus Marsh with a 5.032 on a 4.90 dial in.

South Coast Raceway would like to thank all the local businesses, sponsors, volunteers (especially the ladies in the canteen who have been run off their feet for 3 days), spectators and racers that helped make this event possible and a big success, feedback from the Doorslammer drivers highly regarding the track as the best regional track they have ever been to, already talking a return for 2012

SCR Track Record Gets Smashed

Well done to Marcus & Jo Chambers and their crew breaking the

South Coast Raceway Track Record

4.498...!!

Dash for Cash Meeting Report

South coast Raceway continued with round 2 of the 2010/2011 season, the weather forecast during the week kept entrants numbers down  Starting Friday night, 32 entrants were involved in legal off-street racing, entrants got value for their money getting as much racing as they could handle before the night was over, In the burnout competition afterwards, 1st place was taken out by Ben Phillips, 2nd Daniel Page and 3rd Trevor Newton

On Saturday the ‘Dash for Cash’ event attracted racers from as far away as Tasmania, all trying to get their hands on the big cash prizes for each class, feedback from these racers was positive and look forward to seeing them back again

Marcus & Jo Chambers were back testing his Premix King Monaro Top Doorslammer, showcasing what is in store for the club early next year, Marcus came out on his first pass of the day and blew away the track record that has been held for more than 3 years, crossing the line after 4.498secs shutting the car down before the finish. Unfortunately he locked a front brake and blew the tyre marking the end of his day

The record breaking did not end there as Mike Evans from Tasmania with his Supercharged Chevrolet Camaro is now the fastest entrant to cross the line, setting the record at 154mph.

Results for the day starting with the Bikes, Malcolm Luff from Naracoorte took the cash while Gavin Dohnt from Mt. Gambier was the runner up, top qualifier was Tony Frost doing 6.128secs

In the big field of Super Street cars, the final seen local Scott Cleary defend his title from last year’s event and was too good for Tom Krieger from Naracoorte, who also top qualified for the class with 6.927secs

Continuing his dream return to racing this season was Tim Stone from Hamilton, backing up his win from last month in his HB Torana racing in Super Sedan, runner-up was local Chris Farrell in his Gemini. Top qualifier for the class was Stuart McBain with a 5.351sec pass

In the Blown Outlaws class Mike Evans continued his luck by taking home the cash with local member Mick Cleary runner-up in the class.

Another successful weekend for the club without any major incidents and hope to see it continue into 2011, next meeting will be held 7th and 8th of January which is the ‘Supercharged New Year’ event, it is the biggest field of supercharged outlaw’s that is on the season calendar and is the perfect way to welcome the new year

The South Coast Drag Racing Association would like to officially announce our new major sponsor for the next three years The Premix King Portland, Warrnambool and Hamilton.

With the support that the Premix King will be providing us over the next three years we will be able to finish the concrete safety barriers at the South Coast Raceway.  Once complete, the walls will run from the start line all the way to the end of the primary breaking area on both sides of the racing surface bringing the track up to international safety standards.

The South Coast Raceway cannot thank Marcus & Jo enough for providing the club with this opportunity to help us on our way to becoming Australia’s first international standard 1/8th Mile Drag Racing Facility.

Keep an eye out for Marcus at the track during our 2010/2011 season as he prepares to start testing his newly refurbished HQ Monaro Doorslammer.

Thanks to all those that made an effort to come along to our AGM night on Friday the 20th of August.

1/8th Mile Doorslammer Round for Portland

Drag racing legend and current Australian No. 5 Top Doorslammer driver Peter Kapiris made the drive down from Melbourne last
weekend to Portland's South Coast Raceway to check out the race track and check over the progress of the current track upgrades.

The former Australia Champion was very excited about the prospect to bringing a round of the Australian 1/8th Mile Doorslammer
series to Portland next year.

Earlier this year they ran the first ever 1/8th Mile Doorslammer event in Mildura which attracted over 5500 people into the Sunraysia District.

"We were just blown away by the support of the Mildura City Council, the SDRA and from the public for this event" said Kapiras,
"the town was rewarded for their support with people coming from all over Australia including Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and
everywhere in between to watch".

Kapiras was very impressed with the progress of the upgrades and said that the likelihood of running an event in Portland next year
is very high.  "The South Coast Drag Racing Association is doing a fantastic job and just need a little extra support to get the track
up to the standards we would require and we will be there" Kapiras said.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the club and the Portland community"  said club president Doug Hetherington.  "this would be the first event of its kind ever run in Western Victoria and a chance to fill very hotel and motel in town. These drivers currently only race in
Sydney, Brisbane and Perth and to have the chance to get them in Portland is unbelievable".

For the first time ever in Western Victoria names such as father and son team mates Victor and Ben Bray from Queensland,
Sydney-siders Maurice Fabietti, and Sean Mifsud and Victorian Peter Kapiris and others could be teaming up to bring the loudest
show on earth to town in what would be a spectacular event.

While Top Doorslammers may resemble easily identifiable car bodies as represented by the Holdens, Chevs and Studebakers,
the massive power plant hanging out of the bonnet is a dead give-away that these cars are a bit more than your average motor
vehicle. That 3000 horsepower engine can propel these cars up to 320 kph over the eighth mile with elapsed times in the
high three-second range.

The Top Doorslammers would welcome local schools and the general public to the venue for the opportunity to get a close-up look
at the cars, meet the drivers, grab some autographs, take photos with their heroes and bag some souvenirs!

The Top Doorslammer show would be supported by Supercharged Outlaws bracket as well as Super Sedan, Modified Bike,
Super Street and other sportsman categories.

The VW's are back February 20th, 21st & 22nd

The 2009 VWMA drag racing series kicks off at VW Portland on the weekend of February 21st-22nd at the 1/8th mile South Coast Raceway facility. This is VW Portland’s second year, and will feature a number of new, exciting Volkswagen drag cars, including Mike Kristen’s twin turbo Ghia. Of course, the major sponsor for the 2009 series is Custom Bugs & Buses, with Mike freely admitting that his driving passion is drag racing.

The format for VW Portland has been changed from last year, with the Volkswagens sharing the track with local racers on the Friday night and Saturday, and then the VW guys and gals will have the track all to themselves on Sunday. The Friday and Saturday programme will give VW drivers a chance to compete against other makes and models, as well as VW only qualifying all Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, an extra hour of practice in the morning, followed by four rounds of Round Robin competition with a final, will be strictly for VWs only.

The Friday night is the regular street meet for South- Coast Raceway, and street registered VWs may compete as part of their VW Portland entry. Drag racing under lights adds another dimension to the weekend activities, and track officials have also given permission for a number of demo runs by some of the VW drag cars, such as Rod Penrose and Mike Kristen. The night racing will commence at about 6pm and go through until 9pm.

As with all VWMA drag racing weekends, a street parade and static display for all Volkswagens, not just race cars, will leave South Coast Raceway at approximately 9am on the Saturday morning and wind through the CBD to a park on the water’s edge near the main street of town. The display will remain at the park until about 11am. Please note, that only street registered vehicles may be driven, while all other cars must be trailered.

Saturday afternoon combines VW practice and qualifying, as well as a Chicago Shootout event for South Coast Raceway. VW Portland drivers have the option of competing in the Chicago Shootout for an additional $70, or simply participate in the VW practice and qualifying. The afternoon racing starts at 12noon and finishes at 5pm. In the evening, there is the dinner for VW drivers, crews and campers, followed by VW Tappet Cover Racing, all conducted in the South Coast Raceway club rooms.

On Sunday the programme is all Volkswagen, with an additional hour of practice from 9am - 10am, followed by a four round Round Robin competition with a final. Competition should finish about 2pm, with trophy presentations directly after in the club rooms.

Further information, including the weekend programme, prices and entry forms can be found at the VWMA website - www.vwma.net.au Please note the cut-off for driver entries is February 13th 2009. See you at or on the track for some straight line VW thrills!

Supercharged Saturday

A massive weekend of racing capped off the final race meeting for 2008 at the South Coast Raceway last weekend.

The highlight bracket for the weekend came via the Supercharged Outlaws with some sensational passes put down during qualifying & racing including a new track mph record with Yarra Glen's Chris Hargraves flying down the track on his first pass of the weekend crossing the line at 152mph.

There was some fantastic racing to be seen during the Chicago shootout format in the Outlaw's bracket with Shane Baxter taking out the class with 3 wins from 3 rounds.

Not to be out done the Super Sedan bracket was full of some of the closest ever racing ever seen at SCR.  Adelaide's Peter Cook was in great form in his 48 Anglia Ford tearing his way through the early rounds and into the final with some very good racing. Portland local Sleepy Baker was another racer in great form also winning his way through to the final in Super Sedan.  It was Cook however who came up trumps in the final after a red light from Baker.

Super Street was again dominated by Alister Paulin who won his way through to the final in a full 32 car S/ST field. Tom Krieger also showed some great form during eliminations winning his way into his first finals appearance at SCR.  It was not to be all Krieger's way in the final though with Paulin coming up trumps.

With 5 competitors in the Bike class another round of Chicago Shootout was arranged. At the end of three rounds of racing we had some very consistent riders with 4 of the 5  riders having 2 wins a piece. Naracoorte's Malcolm Luff and Henty's Gavin Dohnt battled it out in the final with Luff crossing the line first and taking the win.
